Dr. Amitabh Profile

Born to the family of Late Garga Narayan Chowdhury and devout spirit, Late Surabala Chowdhury, Amitabh came to this world on the 19th day of December, 1969, as the first child of Sri Dhiresh Narayan Chowdhury and Srimati Biraja Chowdhury. His grandfather apart from being a lawyer, was also the founding Editor of the then Assamese monthly journal “Milan”. At the age of four, Amitabh started his schooling from St Mary’s English High School Guwahati and studied there till Class III. He then joined the Don Bosco English High School, Guwahati where he studied till Class VII. From Class VII onwards Amitabh pursued his education, at the boarding school of Assam Rifles Public School (ARPS) located at the picturesque Laitkor area of Shillong. From ARPS, Amitabh completed his Class X Board exams in the year 1986 securing distinction in Mathematics, and his Class XII Board exams with distinction in Physics in the year 1988. At school, apart from academics Amitabh used to participate in extracurricular activities like Horse riding and indulging himself in Batik paint activities. Amitabh’s skill as a front ranking cricket and table tennis player used to get reflected in the School cricket and table tennis championship events, where he used to bring laurels, for the school. The leadership qualities, in young Amitabh, also provided him the opportunity, to be selected as the House Prefect of the Holding House in the year 1987. After school, Amitabh initially joined the Bachelor of Science programme with Chemistry Honours in the city’s premier Institution Cotton College Guwahati. While he was pursuing the said course, Amitabh cleared the entrance criterion required for admission into the Medical Colleges of Assam and secured admission into the Gauhati Medical College Hospital. Thus began the dream career, of the young boy, who in the year 1993 completed his MBBS degree and then went on to pursue the Master Degree programme at the same Institution, with Surgery as the subject of specialization. In the year 1998 Amitabh was awarded the Masters (MS) degree. A relentless pursuer of excellence, Amitabh decided to groom himself further, for the cause of humanity, and with that ambition in mind went to New Delhi, where he initially worked for few months, as a Resident Doctor, at the Cardiothoracic Department of Malhotra Heart Institute, before shifting to the Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. In the year 2000, Amitabh secured admission into the super specialty degree, in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, conducted by the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Medical College Kanpur; and two years later he successfully attained his Master of Chirurgical (M.Ch) super specialized degree. Immediately thereafter, Amitabh then proceeded to Chennai, to answer the call from India’s front ranking Heart Institute - the Southern Railway Headquarter Hospital, located at Perumber, Chennai. Thus started to blossom, the life of a Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon – who within no time, left an indelible mark in the hearts of all those who came into his association. Amitabh was chiseling his burgeoning surgical skills, when the hands of destiny decided to give a rude jolt, by carrying him away from our midst on the 10th of September. Amitabh was then 33 years old. Other than the members of the family, Amitabh has left behind innumerable number of friends and admirers whose adoration for him can be summarized as: “Simplicity was a spiritual embrace that Amitabh always carried with him together with his sweet smile, compassionate warmth, and friendly nature, humility, integrity, dedication to his work. In his departure, it seems as though he has carried with him, all our tears- persuading us to find an answer in the words uttered, by the good and the great that “Amitabh has not departed…rather he has shifted base and entered that tiny little hamlet… where he continues to tend the hearts of all those, who loved him and who even today remembers Amitabh, for his caring and compassionate nature…” To commemorate the virtuous qualities that Amitabh personified, the Dr. Amitabh Chowdhury Memorial Trust was instituted with the assistance of friends of Amitabh’s family, immediately after the healer of the heart left his mortal self. It made its humble beginning, by refurbishing and renovating the Dr. Amitabh Chowdhury Memorial Library located at the premises of the Gauhati Medical College Hospital in the year 2004. Another modest endeavour of the Trust has been to conduct the Dr. Amitabh Chowdhury Annual Memorial Lecture, on every Birthday eve of Amitabh. On the 19th of December, 2004, the Lecture was formally inaugurated by the jurists’ par excellence Hon’ble Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer. The list of personalities, who thereafter graced the Memorial Lectures, included the likes of the former Chief Election Commissioner of India Mr. James Michael Lyngdoh, Professor Yash Pal, Smt. Nalini Singh, Dr. Ramachandra Guha, Former Sri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Professor Dr. Andre Beteille, and Hon’ble Mrs. Justice Ruma Pal amongst others. Last year, i.e. in the year 2014, the Eleventh Annual Commemorative Lecture was held and the same was delivered by the noted Historian Professor Dr. Rudrangshu Mukherjee. In its endeavour to reach out to the lower privileged strata of society, on 31st May, 2015, in association with Janus Initiatives Kerela, and the Institute of Child Health and Mother’s care, Guwahati, the Memorial Trust, had also organized a free Cardiac Camp. People from cross-section of society, had attended the camp. The physical separation from this beautiful soul is a painful ordeal for all those who were emotionally attached with him in their life journey. But to assuage themselves, they draw solace from the innate goodness and compassionate warmth of Amitabh that even after years of separation chooses to provide that much required companionship which Amitabh used to provide every single moment, he was near them. It is those unforgettable moments that Amitabh’s patients, his friends and the members of the family were so fortunate to perceive, that makes them cherish the beautiful memories of Amitabh.
