Mission Statement

From his early childhood, Amitabh was full of magnanimity and concern for the people around him. Humility, integrity, absence of deceit, uprightness, purity of body and mind, steadfastness were his companion. Self effacement was his comrade-devoted to God with whole hearted discipline. A totally detached person, yet supporting all- in his brief sojourn, Amitabh embodied all the characteristics of a true Yogi. Free from pride, or any kind of delusion, it seemed as though he was able to conquer the evils of attachment and desire. Just as his genuine concern, profound simplicity and courtesy charmed all those who knew him from a closer angle; his eyes always portrayed affectionate warmth. He was in the words of Mathew Arnold, “personification of sweetness and light”. Yes, Amitabh was a sui – generis, unparalleled and incomparable. Perhaps that’s the reason why the goodness embodied in Amitabh, still survives.

To keep alive the humanitarian breadth, The Dr. Amitabh Chowdhury Memorial Trust was instituted soon after Amitabh left his mortal self. The objective of the Trust is to mobilise support to all forms of humanitarian enterprise- infuse and enliven humanitarianism, institutionalise fellowship and practice humanity. The Trust has been created as an instrument to serve society. It made its humble beginning by renovating and refurbishing the Gauhati Medical College Library (since known as Dr. Amitabh Chowdhury Memorial Library) with latest books and journals of Medicinal Science. The Governor of Assam inaugurated the Library, on the 30th of March, 2004.

To commemorate the Birthday of the departed Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon, on the 19th of December, 2004, the Trust initiated a Lecture series, the same was inaugurated by the leading Jurist, Hon’ble Mr. Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer. The list of personalities, who thereafter graced the Memorial Lectures, included the likes of the former Chief Election Commissioner of India Mr. James Michael Lyngdoh, Professor Yash Pal, Dr. Ramachandra Guha, Former Sri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Professor Dr. Andre Beteille, and Hon’ble Mrs. Justice Ruma Pal amongst others. Last year, i.e. in the year 2014, the Eleventh Annual Commemorative Lecture was held and the same was delivered by the noted Historian Professor Dr. Rudrangshu Mukherjee.

This Lecture series is being organized by the Trust in its humble endeavour to stimulate and nurture human unity, apart from raising awareness amongst the masses on various social issues in contemporaneous living. The Trust further aims to acquaint the society with social, cultural environmental and scientific issues as a part of the universal humanitarian campaign.

In its endeavour to reach out to the lower privileged strata of society, on 31st May, 2015, in association with Janus Initiatives Kerela, and the Institute of Child Health and Mother’s care, Guwahati, the Memorial Trust, had also organized a free Cardiac Camp. People from cross-section of society, had attended the camp.

It is also a belief that the Trustees so dearly hold- that by recalling Dr. Amitabh, in a very small way perhaps, they will be able to pursue his mission– which was that of delivering the values of harmony, spirit of common brotherhood and humanism, for which Amitabh always stood for!
